Are you new in the warehousing industry? Is your first day as a warehouse worker coming up? In this article, we are going to lay out how you could prepare for your first day at the warehouse. For our casuals, your safety is our top priority. Before you even start working, we have checked the site location to see if it is within suitable working standards. For an industry that requires a lot of physical and mental strength, we would like you to be fully equipped and prepared -- especially for your first day.
Here in Chandler Personnel, we require our casual workers to get their own safety gear. The standard uniform would include the high-visibility top/vest, steel capped boots/safety boots, and if required, the hard hat.
There are different stores where you can purchase these safety gears:
The warehouse could either be in a remote location, or you may still not be aware if there are any fast food restaurants nearby. Your first day is the perfect time to be familiarized with the location; but before that, it is best to pack something light and easy just to make sure you won’t starve on your first day. Apart from having food ready as soon as you take your break, it will also save you time. This also means you could sit in with your new team, and eating together on your first day is a good icebreaker!
Your first day at a job will always be one of the most important days. You have to make it on time, but it is ideal to arrive early. No one wants you to be late on your first working day, and we all know this isn’t a good way to start your job. Without any unexpected circumstances, arriving early makes a good impression. It could show both your commitment and punctuality. This is also beneficial because being early means you don’t have to be in a rush. You will have enough time to put your things away, and adequate time to look for your supervisor in-charge. In line with that, you could avoid any issues of missing out on anything. Remember, your first day is where you could also have your orientation, so leave your house on time!
It’s your first day which means you get to meet new people! Working in a warehouse means you will be interacting with your coworkers for hours. To keep things running smoothly in the warehouse, communication is vital. If you are feeling shy, a simple hi with a smile could just break the ice! Be friendly or at least be acquainted with the people you’re working with.
Since you are new, you would need to introduce yourself. Throughout the day, you will be learning a brand new process so feel free to ask questions from the other warehouse workers. Don’t forget that communication means you would also have to listen carefully. Make sure to pay close attention to details because this is the information you need to work around the warehouse. If there is anything you don’t understand or if you’re unsure about something, it is best to ask away!
We have established earlier that safety comes first, but being productive around the warehouse is also a high level of importance. Considering that a warehouse is a fast-paced environment, it usually follows a tight schedule to get things done within operational timeframes. There will always be something to do; so if you want to show your commitment to work, do not be seen slacking off. Yes, we know it could get tiring and obviously, it requires a lot of physical effort to keep things going in the warehouse. We’re not asking you to exhaust every inch of your energy, but each move costs time and money. Don’t work way too hard, but please work smart!
In this sense, working smart means you are able to manage your hard skills, but also display how you are able to coordinate your soft skills. Demonstrating that you are a reliable worker who is also determined and dedicated gives your first day a boost. These soft skills are important because it is not like you would have to undergo training for you to learn it. While they can teach you how to do the processes and procedures, it will be up to you how you do it with hard work and efficiency.
With all that, please note that while we recommend you to do your very best on your first day (and the days to come), we would appreciate it if you could inform us if you are feeling uncomfortable at work. We are here to listen, and we will do what we can to help you out. If the workplace does not suit you, especially if something unlikely happens that could affect your safety, you can guarantee that we will do something about it.
These are some of the tips and tricks to help you prepare for your first day as a warehouse worker! There will be a lot of things you will be learning as the days go by, and we are rooting for your success in the workplace. As you already know, we are not expecting you to be like a senior role in the warehouse, but we are hoping you could do your very best.
